Der Entwurf entstand für das über dem Marienaltar befindliche Fresko der ehemaligen Klosterkirche Wiblingen. Die dortigen Arbeiten gehören zu den Hauptwerken des Malers. Die locker gemalte Skizze zeigt eine frühe Stufe im künstlerischen Schaffensprozess.
