Der Laubbaum steht hier als Sinnbild der göttlichen Idee des ständigen Verfalls und Regenerierens, des Sterbens und Wiederauferstehens. Dabei zeigt er den Baum nicht im Zustand des Wandels, sondern auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Blüte. Farbfelder lassen die Baumkrone zum Ornament werden: Die Natur soll hier nicht nachgeahmt, sondern „vergeistigt“ werden.

"What is the concept for the philosopher is the symbol for the artist" is the motto of the self-taught artist Jan van Straaten. The deciduous tree here is meant to be an emblem of the divine idea of constant decay and regeneration, of dying and resurgence. Yet he does not show the tree in a state of change, but at the height of its blossoming. Colour fields turn the treetop into an ornament: Nature is not to be imitated here, but "spiritualised".
