Defamed as "degenerate", Molzahn emigrated to the USA in 1938. His Icarus depiction, divided into geometric forms, was created in Chicago, when he was teaching at the "New Bauhaus". Inspired by the maze of skyscrapers there, he makes Icarus seem to float against a modern backdrop, pausing in his fall. The mythological figure who fails in his flight from the Minotaur's labyrinth thus becomes a symbol for Molzahn's present: the individual who has to find his way in a new environment and is in danger of failing in the process.
