Ihm hängt dabei seine lange, dünne Zunge aus dem Mund. Das sich entsprechend ihrer Rollen deutlich abgrenzende Inkarnat der beiden Protagonisten erinnert an altmeisterliche Gemälde zur Unterscheidung der Geschlechtstypen "Mann" und "Frau", wie sie sich z.B. in Darstellungen von Adam und Eva finden.1Deutsch18.09.2026Die beiden Gestalten spielen deutlich auf das schaurig-erotische Motiv Der Tod und das Mädchen an. Die ausgestreckte Zunge des Teufels weist auf Boteros Kenntnis der Malerei Hans Baldung Griens (1484/85–1549) hin. Das Gemälde kann als ironischer Kommentar auf eine religiös geprägte Sexualmoral interpretiert werden. Insbesondere die katholische Kirche in Lateinamerika verurteilte die erotische Ausstrahlung des nackten menschlichen Körpers als sündhaft: Der Tod in Sünde hatte die Höllenstrafe zur Folge.2Englisch18.09.2026The two figures clearly allude to the eerie and erotic motif of Death and the Maiden. The devil’s outstretched tongue suggests Botero’s familiarity with the paintings of Hans Baldung Grien (1484/85–1549). The painting can be interpreted as an ironic commentary on religiously influenced sexual morality.
