Wegen der vorwiegend aus Holz errichteten Gebäude mittelalterlicher Städte bestand stets die Gefahr verheerender Großbrände. Eine gut organisierte Feuerwehr an der sich jeder Bürger beteiligen musste, war lebensnotwendig. Die erforderlichen Geräte wie Feuerspritzen wurden von der Kommune bereit gehalten. Für die damalige Zeit waren sie technisch anspruchsvolle Erzeugnisse, die ein hoch entwickeltes städtisches Handwerk voraussetzten.
