Von diesem Schrank hat sich jedoch ein Riss erhalten, mit dem sich der Schreiner Hans Jakob Setzendreibell zur Meisterprüfung in Mainz angemeldet hat.1Deutsch2010Wollte ein Schreinergeselle Meister werden, so musst er ein vorgeschriebenes Möbel herstellen und von der Zunft begutachten lassen. Um allerdings die Erlaubnis zur Anfertigung dieses Meisterstückes zu erhalten, hatte er zuvor eine eigenhändige Zeichnung des geplanten Möbels einzureichen. In Mainz hat sich eine ganze Reihe solcher signierter und datierter Risse erhalten. An ihnen lässt sich die Entwicklung der Mainzer Möbelkunst im Verlauf des 18. Jahrhunderts genau verfolgen. Mit Hilfe der Zeichnungen war es teilweise auch möglich, heute noch vorhandene Möbel als Meisterstücke zu identifizieren und einem bestimmten Schreiner zuzuordnen. So kann der Schrank des GNM dem aus Würzburg stammenden Hans Jakob Setzendreibell (gest. vor 1742) zugeschrieben werden, der sich mit dem Riss eines nahezu identischen Möbels am 8. November 1703 in Mainz zur Meisterprüfung anmeldete.2Englisch2010If a journeyman cabinetmaker wanted to become a master, he had to make a prescribed piece of furniture and have it judged by the guild. However, to receive permission to produce this masterpiece, he first had to submit a personally executed drawing of the planned piece of furniture. A series of such signed and dated designs have survived in Mainz, helping to describe the development of Mainz cabinet making over the course of the 18th century. Using these drawings it has sometimes even been possible to identify items of furniture still preserved today as masterpieces and attribute them to specific cabinetmakers. Hence, the wardrobe in the GNM can be attributed to Hans Jakob Setzendreibell (d. before 1742) from Würzburg.
