This ink brush portrait of Hannah Höch dates back to the initial phase of her relationship with Raoul Hausmann: She met him at Herwarth Walden’s gallery “Der Sturm” in Berlin. The 26-year-old student of Emil Orlik’s at the teaching institute of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts strikes the viewer as a shy, sensitive person in a modern bob cut. The silhouette’s elegant, beautiful lines are borrowed from the design vocabulary of late expressionism and will recur in a woodcut portrait of 1917.
