Das Material ließ den höchsten Grad an Wirklichkeitsnähe zu, der durch Einbeziehung textiler Stoffe noch gesteigert wurde. Daher dienten Wachsporträts in der Frühen Neuzeit der privaten Erinnerung. Oft verblieben sie über Generationen im Familienbesitz. Goldschmiede nutzten Wachs zur Anfertigung ihrer Modelle für Medaillen. Summary: Wax has been used in making portraits since Roman Antiquity. The material allowed the highest degree of realism, which was reinforced by adding textiles. For this reason wax portraits served the purpose of private remembrance in the early modern period. They often remained in the family for generations. Goldsmiths used wax in creating models for medals.
