For Lawrence Weiner, language was a material used to create spatially effective “sculptures”. The text of this work challenges perception because, apart from red, the colors it refers to are not visible. However, within a museum context, the final line appears to make an ironic allusion to Barnett Newman’s (1905–1970) famous series of paintings Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue and to Piet Mondrian’s (1872–1944) paintings in primary colors.
