Die Zeichnung zeigt aus der Überschau die hell leuchtende, fast diaphan anmutende Vatikanstadt: Die Kuppel der Peterskirche, ihre große Platzanlage samt Vorhof, in dem die lange Achse der vom faschistischen Regime errichteten „Straße der Versöhnung“ mündet. Mit seiner starren Symmetrie setzt sich das Ensemble deutlich von der wild wuchernden Bebauung Roms ab, die den Eindruck einer lebendig pulsierenden Stadt vermittelt. Rudolf Schoofs Bilder wollen hinter die sichtbare Oberfläche in die tieferen Schichten einer Stadt dringen.
This drawing shows the Vatican City, almost diaphanous in its brilliance, in a panoramic view: The cupola of St. Peter’s Church and its great square including the forecourt, into which leads the long axis of the “Street of the Reconciliation”, built by the Fascist Regime. With its rigid symmetry the ensemble clearly contrasts with the proliferating development of Rome, which conveys the impression of a vibrantly pulsating city. Rudolf Schoofs’ pictures intend to penetrate the deeper layers behind the visible surface of a city.
